I thought Barrett's book was of mixed value as well. I think Todd Tremlin's Minds and Gods is probably the best intro book on the topic that I've come across.

Thanks for coming on the day. It was a lot of fun for me. As you saw, I do not focus on the question of the units of cultural evolution. What implications for such a concept my talk has I leave up to you.

Hardly a hostile audience. This was a group of psychologists and philosophers at a secular university in a secular state. There was no question of courage in that context; indeed, I was surprised that the comment so much as raised an eyebrow. I think I would find it very difficult to say the same thing in a more religious context, partly simply due to not wishing to be rude to the hosts. Mind you, I can not imagine that I would go so far as to actually espouse an accommodationalist position I do not believe in.

I applaud you for your courage to have put it so bluntly to a possibly hostile audience. I am sure the vast majority of people in your position would have invoked NOMA in order to avoid answering the question directly.

Well I hope your argument makes it past Samir especially - he has none of it from me! (But that might be just me.) I'll be interested to see if you can make the meme concept (Boyer's Toolkit 1) fit in with the levels of selection question and avoid the common criticisms of memetic theory.

Either way - this should prove to be an exciting talk, as it seems clear that you intend to endorse a collaborative approach.

So pleased to hear that Sandra R. loves my blog. A bit disappointed that she also loves about 1,500 other blogs on which she has placed the exact same comment. Hope she does not mind that I cut out the URL she had her comment linking to.

Hi Konrad. I can't disagree with what you say, but I guess it is a question of relative importance, rather than absolutes - and not too much evidence either way.

I found the thesis trawling the web quite a while back. I think I was trying to find studies on atheists and happiness, when this one popped up!
